Aligning Knowledge Management to Succession
Planning & People
Barbara Ashkin, Chief Operating Officer of CXtec, #21 on the 2006 Best Small and Medium
Companies to Work for in America list presented on best-in-class techniques for knowledge management at a recent ASMI conference. The list is issued once a year by the Great Place to Work Institute, Inc and contains 50 companies.
The company was founded in 1978 as CABLExpress in Syracuse, New York and has grown to over 350 employees and operates as a $100 million company. Their success is strongly rooted in their foundation --- their employees.
Due to high levels of engagement, CXtec maintains a relatively low turnover and retirement rate. However, those in upper management understand and are committed to a strong succession plan in order to recruit and retain not only the top jobs but all key positions within the organization. When employees do leave, CXtec has made it a priority to capture institutional knowledge through inventory, audits, and maps that make the transition process smoother. These three processes are extremely important, and help in analyzing the knowledge flow throughout the company.
